MY STORY

I remember back to when I was a wee ankle biter where I was always surrounded by music but not the usual kinds like rock, pop, blues etc. Listening to the radio was quite foreign to me until I was a teenager and to be honest, I’m still not a fan of it 🤫 That’s our lil’ secret. My early years revolved around music from my parents’ home country of Croatia, which is still deeply engrained in me, but this was only the beginning of my musical journey. From there I developed a love for punk music and we have Tony Hawks Pro Skater to thank for that. Respect! 👊🏼

Little did I know at the time that my musical journey would flourish into the discovery of heavy metal with Metallica leading the way, to be precise. They’re easily one of my favourite bands to this day and they’re a strong influence when it comes to my song writing. Once I immersed myself in the world of metal music there was no turning back. This was it! The passion for all things metal was well and truly ignited.

From first hearing Metallica’s Fade to Black, I was drawn to the guitar even more. That song and its guitar solos captured all of my attention and as a result, inspired me to become a lead guitarist. Over the years the influences on my lead playing grew and musicians such as Kirk Hammett, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen and John Petrucci (just to name a few) all had a part to play in my music today. Each one of these guitarists taught me different things ranging from understanding modes in music, expert technique and song writing.

After playing in bands for over 15 years, I developed an ear for music (something which is suuuuper important). OK, music theory is pretty important too. No doubt we have all dreaded this part of our musical journey at some point, but it doesn’t need to be as difficult as we make it out to be. I can’t emphasise the importance of musical theory enough but for some reason most musicians tend to skip this step (probably because all we want to do is play). Let me tell you, so did I, but I soon realised its importance and decided to immerse myself in the theory side. I can’t stress its importance enough (yep, I’m converted). The reason is simple. It is the door to your musical creativity. I mean, why do we even learn to play an instrument in the first place? To be like our hero’s and idols, of course! After all,  there’s no better satisfaction than creating something yourself and from your own mind and the music you hear in your head. This is where music theory can unlock all of those mystical doors preventing us from progressing as musicians. Having the combination of knowing exactly what it is you’re hearing and the basics of the music theory concepts under your belt will (without a doubt) transform you into a lethal modern metal guitarist!

Fast forwarding over into the present tense and I am currently playing in a modern melodic thrash metal band called Purenvy based in Newcastle, Australia. If you’re partial to bands such as Trivium, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, All That Remains and Killswitch Engage (I mean, who isn’t?), click the Spotify link to check out our latest album titled Redemption. You won’t be disappointed. I’ll just wait right here …
